Professional Payroll Services for Small Businesses

Running your own 'in house' small business payroll bureau can be very time consuming and stressful.
Increasingly, small businesses are coming to appreciate the advantages of outsourcing their payroll to a professional payroll company. The benefits to this are that as a business owner there is no need to worry about funding extra staff to deal with payroll processing for your employees, and no reason to worry about the minefield that can be employee accounting.

National Minimum Wage

Each year, 1st October presents a new challenge for local businesses operating under tight budgets. Whether rightly or wrongly, the national minimum wage (NMW) provides the benchmark hourly rate for many employers, particularly those in the care and leisure industry.

Care homes and agencies, hotels, restaurants, attractions and parks employ workers at NMW rates and although employers are aware that the change happens each year, it is surprising how many times we are asked what the new minimum wage is, often after the change has occurred.

All businesses should be aware of the change in rate as soon as it is announced (usually during the budget) so that they can forecast their future costs, particularly where labour is the major cost in their business.

Most workers in the UK over school leaving age are legally entitled to be paid at least the NMW and all employers have to pay this rate if you are entitled to it. The rates for the year to come represent an increase of 2.5% and are as follows:

£6.08               the main rate for workers aged 21 and over
£4.98               rate for workers aged 18-20
£3.68               rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18
£2.60               rate for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in their first year of apprenticeship
